October 2022

                                          _________________________________________________________

I begin this report with the sad news of the passing of centre member Rob Urand, following his long battle with cancer. Rob had been an active member of our centre for over 40 years often leading ride outs and attending camping weekends all over the country and abroad on his Velo. As well as the VOC, Rob was also a member of The Christian Motorcycle Association as well as carrying out volunteering work with the local church, the homeless and the ‘SOS’ Bus in and around Colchester. He was a very well-liked member of the centre and will be sadly missed by us all. Our thoughts go to his family at this very sad time.

                                                _______________________________________________________________________

Six Velo’s took part in the final midweek ride out of the year to Suffolk and following various ‘unplanned’ diversions and separations along the way, all the riders made it safely to the pub for some liquid refreshment! Thanks to all of you who have organised and joined the rides throughout the year, most who attend will confirm that there is always a tale to tell after every ride!

For those of you continuing to ride throughout the approaching winter months, please ensure your machines are well illuminated and you are visible to other road users.

The centre ‘WhatsApp’ group is proving very popular with members for news updates and Velo related questions, we have even had a question about Velo clutch adjustment, can you believe that? If you would like to be added please let me know your mobile number.

Peter’s regular monthly centre updates are always an entertaining read so if for any reason you are not receiving them, please let myself or Peter know and we will get you added to the distribution list.

As always, if you fancy a Velo related chat, pick up the phone and call a fellow member of the centre, Peter or myself.

Stay Safe and Stay Seen.

Kind Regards,

Rob Morris

September 2022

Members of the centre attended two recent events which, thanks to the wonderful weather we have experienced this summer, were thoroughly enjoyed by all who came along. In early August, 11 members brought their machines to a bike show held at The Museum of Power nr Maldon. The day is always very popular with a variety of bikers and this year was no exception. In early September the centre attended The Copdock Motorcycle Show, again this is always a popular event with ample to see and do on the day. Thanks to all those who attended to help give a great display of bikes for the centre. Recent ride out days have also proved popular and, from the updates we receive from Peter Merrick, always seem to end with some humorous tail to tell of an incident encountered during the ride! It won’t be long before the autumn days are upon us, so I hope you manage to squeeze in some more time in the saddle before its time to pack away the bike for the winter! As always, stay safe and ride safe!

July 2022

As Peter mentioned in his recent email, what a treat we had at The Horse and Groom recently, a fine display of 19 Velo’s plus John Vine’s Norton project which sounded absolutely amazing, took me straight back to standing in the paddock at the IOM Classic TT! Many thanks again to our own John Chisnell who helped to arrange this for us, what a great day had by all!

As reported in recent emails from Peter and in my reports in Fishtail, I am looking to create a ‘WhatsApp’ group for the centre. This will be open to centre members only and it is hoped will help to aid with centre updates plus will be open to anyone to ask any ‘Velo’ related issue they may be having; “How do I start my Velo”, “I am having trouble adjusting my clutch”, “I’m looking for a 3/16” x 1” BSF bolt” etc etc. 😊  The idea being that anyone who is having any Velo issue may be able to get answers or assistance from another centre member.

A couple of rules I ask you all to try and follow:

  • Velo related issues only please!

  • Please remember to add your name in your question so we all know who it is asking, it won’t be obvious to other group members who you are unless your telephone number is stored in their phone.

  • Feel free to add bike related pictures if it helps with any request you have.

If you would like to be added to the group please forward me your name and phone number (some of your email addresses are obvious who they belong to!!) I will create the group this coming weekend.

As mentioned previously we are looking for members who wish to bring their machines along to The Museum of Power Bike Show on Sunday August 7th. I have previously attended this show and it is a great day out, lots of bikes of all kinds plus the opportunity to have a look round the working steam driven pumping station. (Museum of Power - What's On)

Please let me know if you would like to come and show your bike off on the Centre’s  Stand for the day and I will add you to the list.

The other show we will be attending as a centre, is the Copdock Bike show on Sunday 4th September, again this is a great day and If you have never been you should try and get along, you won’t be disappointed. With the additional benefit that you will get free entry if you show your bike!!

Please let either Peter or myself know if you would like to attend this show with your bike.

June 2022

There was a great turnout at The Horse & Groom earlier this month, including new member Andrew White, welcome Andrew! Mark arrived on his Indian Velocette which I am told sounded great! The Sunday before this saw a run up to Cambridge with Peter Tibbitts coming down to the Sugarloaves on his Thruxton to lead everyone back to the "Bees". Five Velo's from Chelmsford enjoyed the ride including Jeff and Ian who I understand made a ‘detour’ to carry out a detailed inspection of a pub and the food it had on offer!

Our first mid-month run out took place on Tuesday 17th led by Dave Izard. An enjoyable ride out was had by all who attended, in good weather with great company and good food.

If you decide to lead a ride out or are planning your own trip out, it may be worth passing by Steven De'Ath's place as he is not too mobile at the moment and would be more than happy to see some bikes, and possibly the riders too! He said he'd have the kettle on but please call him first to ensure he is available.

Alan and Ann have thankfully now recovered from the Virus and have declared themselves "Open for Tea and Cake", again, they would also love to see you but please phone first before visiting.

Could I remind anyone who is looking to attend either The Copdock Show on September 4th or the Museum of Power on August 7th, to let either myself of Peter know so that we can confirm our booking with the event organisers?

Keep a look out for Peter’s regular monthly update and if for any reason you are not receiving it, please let myself or Peter know and we will get you added to the distribution list.

As always, if you fancy a Velo related chat, pick up the phone and call a fellow member of the centre, Peter or myself.

Hope to see you all soon,

Ride safe,

Rob

April 2022

Following the centre’s AGM on the 6th of April, Peter Merrick, myself, Norman Archard and Roy Neil were all re- elected as Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Web Master respectively.

Our monthly meets on the second Sunday will continue at The Horse and Groom at Galleywood, as well as our monthly rides on the third Tuesday, between May to October.

Several ride outs, shows and group visits are already planned, so make sure you check the club diary in FT and the centre website, where any last-minute amendments will be posted, always worth checking before you leave home!

Volunteers are required to lead a few remaining rides so if you are interested, please contact Peter ASAP.

With over a dozen ride outs/visits already scheduled, it looks to be a much busier year than the previous few, so now is the time to ensure your bike is prepped ready to enjoy the roads of Essex and beyond!

There is a plan to start up a ‘Centre WhatsApp Group’ for any group member to join as a means of communication for either technical or ride out related questions. If you would like to be added, please contact myself by phone or email and I will add you to the group. (Please ensure you include your phone number if you choose to email me!).

Look out for Peter’s regular monthly update and if for any reason you are not receiving it, please let myself or Peter know and we will get you added to the distribution list.

As always, if you fancy a Velo related chat, pick up the phone and call a fellow member of the centre, Peter or myself.

Hope to see you all soon,

Ride safe,

Rob.

March 2022

With spring just round the corner and pandemic restrictions now receding at last, it looks like we can get back out and start enjoying our bikes once again!

The Horse and Groom meets each month are, as always, proving very popular and have always been well supported over the last two years when restrictions allowed.

This week sees the centre AGM at The H & G, so this could be my last report should there be a charge of eager volunteers to take the helm!

All being well and pending any hostile take over bid for the position of secretary I will report back to you all of the outcome of the meeting in the next issue or FT.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Peter Merrick for his monthly email updates he circulates to all the members. Always entertaining and full of information on all things Velo related! Don’t stop sending them Peter, we always enjoy receiving and reading them!

A quick update on dad’s Viceroy Project, well its already going back together so I’m sure he will be out on it at some point this year. I will try and include a picture for the next issue.

Hope to see you all soon at The H & G and as always, if you fancy a Velo related chat, pick up the phone and call a fellow member of the centre, Peter or myself.

If you are out riding, make sure you are seen and stay safe.

Rob.

December 2021

I start by wishing you all a belated ‘Happy New Year’ and hoping that this year will be kinder to us than the last couple have been!

Our monthly Sunday meets at The Horse and Groom are still proving popular, even with the change in temperature. December saw a great turn out of machines and riders, although at the time of writing this there is once again uncertainty as to if we will be allowed to meet up in the new year with the new variant currently dominating the news.

Hopefully all the members are receiving the monthly centre update email, sent out by Peter Merrick? If you are not on Peter’s email list, please let him know and you can look forward to a monthly Velo themed update from him.

Assuming we are allowed out to play at some point next year, I hope to bring my recently completed restoration of a 1960 Velocette Scrambler to the Horse and Groom. Not sure if I am brave enough to ride it there though, as with the rear sprocket the size of a dinner plate it will take hours to complete the few miles from home!

Hope to see you all soon at The H & G and as always, if you fancy a Velo related chat, pick up the phone and call a fellow member of the centre, Peter or myself.

If you are out riding, make sure you are seen and stay safe.

Rob.

July 2021

So, after 18 months of imposed lockdown and itching to get back in the saddle and ride, I choose this time to break my arm whilst starting our 1923 Rover! Unfortunately, the initial cast didn’t do the trick so my right arm is now plated and screwed, I wonder if they used BSF or Whitworth? I guess that’s me back in the pits for the remainder of this year!

Our monthly meets at The Horse and Groom have been proving very popular now restrictions are easing and Peter reports how good it has been to see some faces that have been shielding during the lockdown.

Peter recently visited the weekly "Bike Night" meeting on Bentley Green in Great Bentley,

The general mix of bikes on the "Green" is vast, from classic British and Japanese to cruisers and custom bikes. There's something for all to admire. If you fancy a trip there one Wednesday evening, please let Peter know, with enough club members attending we could even have a Velo section on The Green!

Dave Issard led a group out on the most recent run, the weather was excellent and extremely hot so Dave kindly amended the length of the run to suite the conditions with two stops for refreshments. The run was enjoyed by all, with 7 riders, 6 Velo mounted, sitting down to coffee and cake and a good natter. A very pleasant day out. Well done Dave.

Peter has also reported that on all the recent runs, and meetings at The H&G, most if not all the Velo's have arrived and departed with little or no fuss. I guess all that time spent in the workshops during lockdown has paid off!  (Hopefully this won’t be the kiss of death for you starting your bike at our next meeting Peter!)

Several members enjoyed a run up to the "Founders Day" meeting at Stamford Hall. Again, it was a very hot and brilliant day out with a very diverse collection of old bikes on show.

For those members who have offered to show a bike at The Copdock Motorcycle Show on the 19thSeptember don’t forget to contact Peter to arrange collection of the paperwork you will need for entry on the day. This is an excellent day out and I personally recommend anyone to attend.

I finish as always, if you fancy a Velo related chat, pick up the phone and call a fellow member of the centre, Peter or myself.

Stay safe and ride safe.

Rob.

June 2021

Just when we thought the end was in sight, once again revised restrictions look to hold off many of our plans to return to a ‘life before Covid’ I write this on the day we ‘should’ have had many of our restrictions lifted, but it now seems we will be waiting at least another month before changes may be made.

This will mean any plans for an AGM will be put on hold until such time all restrictions are lifted.

Ongoing rules still make it difficult for us to meet, however, a few members have managed both meeting at The Horse and Groom on the second Sunday of the month and joined in on two runs, the first led by Peter M and the second by Johnny Allen.

Peter’s run led nine riders to the Wings Café at North Weald Air Field, dodging the rainclouds for a very enjoyable run out for all who attended.

Johnny’s run saw six members taken for an excellent run through the Essex and Suffolk countryside arriving at Andy Tiernan Classics in Framlingham for a browse. I understand one member, who shall remain nameless, was seriously contemplating adding to his own collection of bikes whilst there! Apparently, a consultation with his ‘Financial Advisor’ indoors took place and we are awaiting news of an approval! A stop off at a pub on the way back for an ‘Al Fresco’ lunch was enjoyed by all on the ride plus they were joined by Rob Urand who made a dash to meet them once he heard Peter M was at the bar with his wallet open.

Peter M is looking forward to hearing from anyone who would like to lead out a run, he can be contacted on 01206 841883.

The centre has had confirmation of an indoor stand reserved for us at the Copdock Motorcycle Show on the 19th September. Although the last show in 2019 was a complete wash out due to nonstop rain, we displayed an excellent range of Velocette models on the day as well as being joined by Allen Millyard, and his 698cc Velocette V Twin If you would like to attend the show with your bike please contact either Peter or myself. The show is a month earlier this year so hopefully the weather should be more favourable.

If any members are planning to attend Founders day or the VOC National Rally please contact either Peter or myself, 07940133331, and we will be able to put likeminded travellers in contact.

I finish as always, if you fancy a Velo related chat, pick up the phone and call a fellow member of the centre, Peter or myself.

Stay safe and ride safe.

Rob

May 2021

At last, the dim light at the end of the tunnel, that so many of us mistook for an approaching Velo, has grown into a bright light that signals we can once again get out on our bikes and ride!

With restrictions being further reduced, I am certain many of you are looking forward to enjoying a ride out on what I am sure are very well maintained, gleaming machines.

A few members of the centre have already met up and enjoyed some rides out together. On Friday 16th April both existing and new members met at The Horse and Groom to catch up on some very missed Velo chat!

Our regular meet on the second Sunday of each month at The H & G has now resumed and I look forward to seeing many of you there soon.

We are now also in a position to plan and book an AGM, details of which will be posted on the centre website and circulated via Peter Merrick’s regular email updates. (If you would like to receive Peter’s Centre update emails, drop him an email @ petermerrick@hotmail.co.uk or call 01206 841883)

Peter is, as ever, eagerly awaiting to hear from any volunteers who would like to lead a run out during the summer months, so if you are able, please contact him to book in your run.

As always, if you fancy a Velo related chat, pick up the phone and call a fellow member of the centre, Peter or myself. We can be contacted on 01206 841883, (Peter) or me on 07940 133331.

Stay safe and ride safe.

March 2021

Some great news to start this report is that Alan Morris is now back at home with Anne. We all send our best wishes for your continued recovery Alan.

As restrictions are planned to be reduced over the next few months, we can at last look forward to meeting up once again on our bikes.

From speaking to various members of the centre over the last year I know many of you are keen to show off the labours of your time spent in lockdown. I am certain the first meet will have a collection of bikes that have never looked so clean and shiny!

Peter Merrick is eagerly waiting to hear from any volunteers who would like to lead a run out during the summer months, so if you are able, please contact him to book in your run.

With the current situation as it is, we obviously cannot hold our AGM at the moment so it is proposed that the existing committee members will remain in place until such time we can all safely meet. At present the Committee are as follows:  Peter Merrick - Chairman, Rob Morris – Secretary, Norman Archard – Treasurer and Roy Neil - Web Master.

Roy is keen to add some new photos to our centre web site so if you have a picture of your bike you would like displayed, please send them to Roy or Peter.

As always, if you fancy a chat, Velo related or otherwise, pick up the phone and call a fellow member of the centre, Peter or myself. We can be contacted on 01206 841883, (Peter) or me on 07940 133331.

For now, take care, stay safe and get polishing your bikes ready for our first meet!

Rob.

January 2021

As we in the UK have now entered our third, and hopefully, final lockdown, I am once again lacking in any club activities to report to you all. I can, however report that due to once again having ‘lockdown-time’ on my hands, the Scrambler project is only a week away from start up, or should I say, I am just seven days from suffering severe right leg ache from kicking it over!

Aside from the lockdown, the weather in the past few weeks has been less than favourable for any form of riding, apart from the chilling temperatures it feels like it has not stopped raining since January 1st. That woolie hat I received for Christmas has been well used in the workshop over the past month.

For those who are familiar with my reports, I always like to offer a friendly ear for anyone wanting a chat and this month two members have taken me up on the offer.

One call was from John, a Velo owner new to the centre, it was great to hear from you John and I look forward to meeting you soon once restrictions allow.

I also received a call from one of the ‘old-guard’, sorry Dave Bardwell, I couldn’t resist that!

Dave and I chatted at length about what projects we had been working on over the last few months and soon came to the conclusion that we all must spend countless hours fettling ‘essential’ improvements and modifications to our bikes! Let’s be honest, I think we all have tried to improve on an original design in the name of progress at some time! Why would you spend a fiver on Ebay for a part when you can spend a whole weekend making something that’s fit for purpose!

With an end to this lockdown not expected anytime soon, it looks like we have more time to finish projects and prepare our machines hopefully for a summer ride out together.

As always, if you fancy a chat Velo related or otherwise, pick up the phone and call a fellow member of the centre, Peter and myself are always happy to receive a call from a Velo fellow and can be contacted on 01206 841883, (Peter) or me on 07940 133331.

For now, take care and stay safe with all your families

Rob.

Saturday 12th December 2020

Due to the ongoing pandemic there is little to report on our centre activities.

Hopefully you are all keeping well and are using this spare time for any fettling required on your bikes.

If you are a new (or an old) member to our centre and are struggling to resolve an issue with your bike, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Peter Merrick for assistance.  If we cannot help you with your problem, we probably know someone who can.  Alternatively, if you are just in need of a chat, Velocette related or otherwise, pick up the phone and call a fellow member, Peter and myself are always happy to receive a call from a Veto fellow and can be contacted on 01206 841883, (Peter Merrick) or me on 07940 133331 (Rob Morris).

Photo of Rob's bit of fun, fettled and ready for a ride out soon.

Wednesday 9th September 2020

Please note that from Monday 14th September 2020 new laws on gatherings take effect.  For information on future monthly meetings, please check your inbox or call Peter or myself directly.

Sunday 9th August 2020

A hot Sunday saw another good turn out of bikes at our monthly meet at The Horse and Groom.  Ten riders arrived on a variety of models and all enjoyed a socially distanced drink or two whilst taking the chance to talk about something other than Covid for a few hours.  I took the opportunity to give the Endurance its first run out after completing some minor maintenance which included fitting it with ‘new shoes’, you just can’t beat those Avon Roadrider MKII’s!

It was agreed on the day that we would not arrange any more mid-week run outs at the present time due to ongoing restrictions.

It was great to see some new faces and bikes on the day and we look forward to seeing you again at future meets once restrictions allow.

If you are new to the club please make every effort to come along and meet us at The H&G, it’s always handy to know a local Velo-Fellow when in need of assistance or advice!

image001-3.jpg

Tuesday 21st July 2020

Our first run out for this year since the 'lock-down' began.  John Allen celebrating his recent 80th birthday, led some 14 bikes that met at The Marks Tey Diner and took a 70 mile ride stopping for lunch and a complimentary birthday drink from John to The Harbour Lights Restaurant in Walton-on-the-Naze.

On the return from Walton-on-the-Naze the group made a detour to the care home where Alan Morris is currently in residence.  Thanks go to Bill Fagg, Anne and the care home for arranging this wonderful surprise for Alan.  He was clearly thrilled with the visit and we all wish him well in his continued recovery.

image002-2.jpg

Sunday 12 July 2020

With the easing of lockdown restrictions and the reopening of The Horse and Groom, we were finally able to hold a ‘socially distanced’ gathering.  With eight very well turned out Velo’s in attendance plus an extra four members who had opted for four wheel transport, the chance to enjoy a drink and a natter in the pub garden on such a gloriously sunny day was a very welcome relief from the recent months spent in lockdown.

Tuesday 16 June 2020

Although we still remain in the midst of reduced lockdown restrictions our centre has been able to welcome two new members in the last month. Hopefully it will not be too long before we can officially welcome them over a drink at The Horse and Groom!

Like many of our members, our chairman has been busy spending time in the workshop on various projects and has also taken the time and effort to search out various cafés serving takeaway teas and rolls for possible meeting points once we restart our monthly runouts. Social distancing guidelines to be followed of course!  Hopefully your leathers will still fit after all those bacon rolls you have eaten in the name of research Peter?

As I mentioned in my last report, I have used my time in lockdown to move forward with my 500cc Scrambler restoration. Hopefully it should be completed in the next month and should get its first run out very soon.

I am sure our members will be pleased to hear that Alan Morris is making some positive progress in his recuperation, he is now walking more often and I believe he enjoyed his first cup of tea recently, our best wishes to him and Ann.

If you find yourself in need of a chat, Velo related or otherwise, pick up the phone and call a fellow member, if you are new to the centre feel free to call either Peter, (01206 841883) or myself (07940 133331), we are always happy to talk Velocette to other similar minded individuals!

Hopefully we will be able to meet up soon but, in the meantime, if you are going out on your bikes please ride and stay safe.

Wednesday 10 June 2020

Our Chairman, Peter Merrick, has put together a story on Alan Morris our previous Social Secretary.  This is to recognise the outstanding association Alan has with Velocette Motorcycles and the Chelmsford Centre.  The story can be downloaded by clicking the button on the right.

Tuesday 28th April 2020

Our new Social Secretary providing updates now is our member Rob Morris who as kindly taken up the reigns from Alan.  Planned events for our centre, indeed throughout all clubs, are on hold until the Government ends this lockdown due to the pandemic.  With time on our hands, restorations and repairs may be on your mind.  Don't hesitate to get in touch via e-mail to each other for any help or guidance with your projects.  Meanwhile stay safe.

Tuesday 7th April 2020

Another update on our members - Alan M is in lockdown in his care home and talking to his wife remotely, he is walking better but with assistance.  Rob A is recovering slowly and is mobile but lacks energy.  We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Thursday 12th March 2020

Just an update on three of our centre members.  Alan continues to make progress, albeit slowly, following his stroke last year.  He is in a care home near Colchester and many of his friends have been to see him, though currently with the virus outbreak visiting is now restricted.  Check before going.  Rob has had surgery and has been very unwell so our thoughts are with him and his family.  Graham has recovered well from his surgery and good to see him at the Christmas dinner.

Sunday 8th March 2020

Despite the intermittent showers, we had an excellent turnout at the Horse and Groom with 15 members and 4 Velocettes, one a new member on his wonderful original Clubman including 50+  years of patina.

Wednesday 4th March  2020

Eleven members attended the Section AGM on a very wet evening.  Chairman Peter Merrick headed the meeting with the only notable change in office being the role of Secretary after the resignation of Alan Morris due to illness.  Rob Morris has stepped forward and will take up the position of Secretary.  The chairman has disseminated the Minutes of the Meeting to all the members.

Friday 21st February 2020

A total of twenty-two, members and partners, attended the annual 'Post Christmas Dinner' at the White Hart.  A huge success, delicious food and company and our thanks go to Dave Bardwell for organizing the dinner this year.

Sunday 9th February 20202

Meeting

Sunday 12th January 2020

Our first meeting of the year (tbd)

Tuesday 15th October 2019

John Allen volunteered to lead our last mid-week ride out.  Four Velocettes, a Norton and a Honda made up the convoy.  As usual John led us into uncharted waters!  Our first stop was a quick cuppa at Harwich and then on to Walton-on-the-Naze for lunch at the 'Lighthouse'.  Again excellent weather and clear roads led to a satisfying day out.  Thanks John.

An up date on our Social Secretary Alan Morris, he is making slow but positive progress and is supported by family and friends.

Sunday 13th October 2019

Our monthly meeting at the 'Horse and Groom' had four attendees.  John Chisnall, George Coates, David Bardwell and Paul Weston.  Just enough for a quorum so we put the world to rights, though no meeting minutes were taken.

Sunday 6th October 2019

The Chelmsford Centre put on a display of Velocettes at the Copdock Motorcycle Show, Ipswich, Suffolk.  What a day.  With only a brief let-up in the rain, it was an extremely damp affair.  Fortunately we were under cover and the following members displayed their bikes: Steven Death - 1940s MAC, Chris Woods - 1963 Viper, Rob Morris - 1965 Thruxton, Colin Morris - MAC Bobber, David Bardell - KTT Mk8, Denis Bardwell McCandless KTT Mk8.  Peter M. was the only member to ride his MSS to the venue and home again in the pouring rain!  At one time our stand was graced with Allen Milliards Velocette V twin.  Two iron MAC engines combined to make a factory looking V twin bike. There was not much on this bike he did not make himself and the work was completed in 8 weeks. What a clever bloke and modest too.  Thanks to the members for putting in the effort to promote the club.

Tuesday 24th September 2019

This news is not good.  Last week we heard that our Social Secretary, Alan Morris, had a stroke and is in Hospital.  He is very poorly and it will be some time before he will be continuing his update to this page.  Meanwhile both Rob and Graham are recovering from medical treatment.  We wish all three of our members a speedy recovery.

Tuesday 17th September 2019

A change for this ride as our run leader was unavailable.  Peter M stepped up and took three other Velocettes for a short run from the 'Horse and Groom' to the Airfield at North Weald.  They had breakfast at the'Wings' cafe on the airfield.  The venue is easy to find if you head out westward on A414 from Chelmsford.  There is always a lot going on there if you fancy a run out during the week.

Sunday 8th September 2019

The meeting at the Horse and Groom was very well attended.  Good range of motorcycles ranging from 350cc machines, Velocettes that started first kick to a 2300cc Triumph that had to be 'bump' started.  (Hope you got the battery sorted Dave.)

Tuesday 20 August 2019

Alan M's Birthday run was well attended, but there is always room for more riders to participate.  The ride started from the Diner at Marks Tey in glorious sunny weather.

Saturday 17th August 2019

Norman's breakfast run was very well supported and the weather was warm and sunny.  Norman led us via scenic roads and lanes to his usual 'cafe' that we found was busier than usual.  It seems many other bikers have found this gem of a place for the full English Breakfast.  Thanks Norman for a 'grand day out'.

Tuesday 23rd July 2019

The weather was excellent for our Centre BBQ but unfortunately the attendance was disappointing.  George and his wife Pam put on an excellent spread and George has obviously been taking notice of some of the many cookery programs on TV as the food was cooked to perfection.  Whilst the Gazebo was erected we only made use of it for a photo opportunity.

Tuesday 16th July 2019

Bill's run was similar to one of his previous years route when it poured with rain from start to finish, though this year the weather was hot, sunny and dry.  Peter M. had a stuck carb slide and Norman was on hand to assist whilst the rest us carried on to an excellent lunch at Bill's favorite pub in Suffolk.

Sunday 14th July 2019

Our meeting brought forth 14 members , with 7 Velocettes and various other bikes.  Ralph, another new face at the meeting was doing up a Venom which had not run for the last 20 years, spent a lot of time checking out our Velocettes.  (Sorry Ralph, I didn't catch your surname.)

Tuesday 11th June 2019

Our annual visit to John Vines Engineering was organized by John Chisnall.  John is now back riding again after 7 months lay off owing to medical advise.  John led 11 of us off from the 'Horse and Groom' at 10 am, to see the progress of the Norton 4 DOHC project.  We are always made welcome by John Vines and the people working there, plus everything stops for tea and cakes.  Much progress had been made since last year but there was a delay with the crankshaft being made and delivered.  Hopefully next year the engine may be running and in its frame.  We spent several hours there and only 3 of us went off to have lunch.  Many thanks to John for organizing the event and good to see you back in the saddle.

Sunday 9th June 2019

We had another good turnout of 11 members turning up at the 'Horse and Groom' on various machinery, including several Velocettes.  Sunny weather obviously encourages members to exercise their machines.  Also, according to Fishtail our Centre membership is growing, hope to see some more new faces soon.

Tuesday 14th May 2019

Our first day Run of the year was organised by Dave Iszard and started at Rayne Railway Station leaving at 10 am.  Sorry to say only 4 members supported Dave's run.  However, they had a very good lunch at 'The Crown', Acton, Suffolk, and I believe a couple of tea stops were included later on.  Thanks Dave, you seem to know where all those secret stops are for tea drinking.

Sunday 12th May 2019

It was our 'Show off your Velo' event at noon at 'The Horse and Groom'.  I'm pleased to say we had 15 Velocettes lined up ready to be judged in the sun.  Unfortunately several members arrived far too late to be involved.  Thanks to all who participated in voting, without your support it would be impossible to run this event.  Also thanks to my wife Anne who was a great help to me on the day.  The winner this year was Nick Rowntree with his 1951 MAC, closely followed by Ian Hayes with his 1960 Viper, 3rd was Peter Gilmore with his 1947 KSS MkII.  Nice to see Bob Nicholls who came all the way from the Cotswolds to join us, all in all a grand event.  We hope the guy on the beautiful blue/silver Thruxton that refused to fire up, got home safely?

Sunday 5th May 2019

Robert Urand and I set off on our Velocettes to the "Sugar Loafs' to meet up with members of the Cambridge Centre.  We were led by several Cambridge lads to the 'Bees in the Wall' at Whittlesfield, in brilliant sunshine.  Seven of our members attended this event all on Velocettes as I recall.  Peter Tibbitt"s Thruxton unfortunately had a gearbox problem but he was in attendance anyway.  (Hope it's now sorted Pete?)  Thanks to the Cambridge Centre for the invite, a pleasant days run.  Robert and I clocked up 94 miles.

Sunday 14th April 2019

It was good weather for our meeting at the Horse and Groom.  We had 14 members attending.  Welcome to Chris Wood a new member who introduced himself.  We also welcome 4 other new members to our centre: Darren Buckley, Tony Clayfield, Nigel Edmonds and Tony Harter; please introduce yourselves whenever you manage to get to the Horse and Groom.

Sunday 24th March 201

The Pioneer Run was supported by only 2 members, those being Norman Archard and Bill Fagg..  They observed the run from the Transport Cafe near Cowfold, where they also obtained a hearty breakfast - sorry to say I did not make it.

Sunday 10th March 2019

Our meeting was down to 3 members.  This was probably due to wet and very windy weather.  Thanks to Peter Gilmore who confirmed this report for me.

Wednesday 6th March 2019

Our AGM was held at the 'Horse and Groom' with a good turnout of 15 members.  Our Chairman Peter Merrick started proceedings at 8:00 pm.  There was no change to the elected club officials, so the same personal for another year.  There was no problem in sorting out the Runs and Events for the rest of the year.  Any changes to our programme will be put on our website.  Peter will be e-mailing the complete report of the AGM to all members on the list.  Now is your chance to get on the list if you wish to do so by contacting your chairman.

Friday 1st March 2019

Our post Christmas Dinner took place at Margaretting Tye at 'The White Hart'.  Sixteen of us including wives and members sat down to a very pleasant evening of food and drink.  (Someone had a cold dinner, but I'm hoping that it didn't spoil his evening).  We rounded off the evening with our usual raffle.  Anne and I would like to thank those who kindly donated prizes to help boost our Centre Funds.  Unfortunately 3 people were unable to attend.  Thanks go to Norman Archard for organizing it all.

Sunday 10th February 2019

I was unable to attend our monthly meeting at the 'Horse and Groom' as it was my wife Anne's big birthday.  No chance to get the Venom out, so thanks to John Chisnall for reporting to me that only 5 members attended, unusual to get such a low turnout.

Sunday 13 January 2019

The snow and ice have held off so far, so it was a pleasure to set off on the Venom for our first meeting of the month at the 'Horse and Groom'.  Eleven  members attended, 6 bikes of which 3 were Velocettes.  Nice to see Pete Merrick had finally sorted out his MSS with its electrical problem and it was running well (touch wood).  There was an error with the date of our section members Post Christmas Dinner in FT457.  The correct date is 1st March at 'The White Hart' Margaretting Tey 7:00 for 7:30 pm

Sunday 9th December 2018

Our monthly meeting at the 'Horse and Groom' was attended by 11 members but only 5 bikes which included 2 Velocettes.  Bernard Stripp surprised us by turning up on his new Chinese 400cc Boy Racer.  (Can't remember the make, felt nice to sit on, but perhaps I'm now too old to be a Boy racer).

Wednesday 21st November 2018

A pre-AGM was arranged by our chairman Pete Merrick at the 'Horse and Groom' at 8:00 pm.  Unfortunately a delay on the dreaded A12 cause several of us to attend late.  Our chairman soon brought the meeting to order.  However, we had a noisy crowd in the bar which made it difficult for all of us 16  members to hear at times.  I'm sure we covered everything in preparation for our AGM for Wednesday 6th march 2019 at the Horse and Groom at 8:00 pm.  The chairman e-mailed out a full report to all members on his list.

Sunday 11th November 2018

Our monthly meeting at the 'Horse and Groom' was on a busy Remembrance Sunday.  I arrived on the Venom to find the place packed out with runners.  The landlord kindly arranged seating for all 12 of us in the restaurant area, as the bar was packed to capacity.  Most members arrived on bikes but only 3 Velocettes today.  Please note our section Christmas dinner is scheduled for Friday the 1st March 2019.  Our AGM will be on Wednesday 6th March 2019 at the 'Horse and Groom ' at 8:00 pm.  Happy New Year to all.

Tuesday 15th October 2018

Chairman Peter Merrick took us on our last run of the year.  Pete led 8 of us from Marks Tey Diner at 10 am.  I counted 7 of us on Velocettes and I will not mention who was not!  This probably was the best sunny autumnal day we have had so far.  Pete took us on a very pleasant route avoiding most of the very busy part of north Essex.  Fantastic weather all the way to Pin Mill on the coast where we arrived at 'The Butt and Oyster' for lunch.  Looking out over the estuary we had a pleasant view while tucking into our lunch outside in the blazing sun.  Rob Urand guided three of us the long way back avoiding Colchester and the A12.  Many thanks Pete for taking us to Pin Mill, a delightful place to visit.  I clocked 87 miles.

Sunday 14th October 2018

Our monthly meeting at the 'Horse and Groom' brought forth only 7 members of which two were on velocities.  This was our lowest attendance for the year, so far.

Saturday 29th September 2018

Members arrived early at Marks Tey Diner for Norman Archard's free Breakfast Run.  Norman led 10 of us away a 9:00 am and once again good weather was with us all day.  I noted six Velocettes were present amongst out machinery.  Norman never fails to find decent empty 'B' roads and lanes that are generally devoid of traffic. Eventually, after a pleasant run of over 50 miles we arrived at our breakfast stop Cafe 33 Stradishall.  John Allen had a minor electrical problem, Jeff Duffy gave assistance to help solve it, but no joy.  Eventually we all settled down to enjoy our free breakfast. (This could be our last free breakfast as Club funds are getting low).  Thanks Norman for organizing a good days run in perfect weather, I clocked 91 miles.

Tuesday 18th September 2018

This was John Allen's run to the Shuttleworth Aerodrome starting from Marks Tey Diner leaving at 10:00 am. It was a fine but blustery day as 10 members (including 4 Velocettes) set off with John leading and myself following behind him as the pacemaker.  (Not sure how that really works?)  A comfort stop was arranged near Buntingford, however Paul Weston had to return home. After 20 odd miles 9 of us arrived at Shuttleworth to join our friend Brian Cant for lunch.  However, only 5 of us paid out to go around the workshops which I thought was well worth it.  (We could have got a discount for a group of 10!)  We left later on to hit the rush hour, however John managed to keep us away from most of it.  Thanks John for an interesting days run, I clocked up 152 miles - - but I was on my T100!

Sunday 9th September 2018

We held a 'Bring and Buy' at the monthly meeting at the 'Horse and Groom'.  I counted 14 members in attendance but there was not a lot of action on the B & B front as far as I know.  Anyway thanks for the effort John Chisnall and Pete Merrick put into it, and those who brought along all their goodies.

Tuesday 21st August 2018

Our run today was led by Norman Archard starting from Marks Tey Diner.  There were 8 machines in attendance, 5 of which were Velocettes, as Norman led us off at 10:00 am.  The sun shone brightly as we motored along traffic free 'B' roads and narrow lanes.  Eventually arriving at 'The Henny Swan Arms' near Sudbury, Suffolk for lunch.  After a very good lunch John Allen led us a short cut back too Essex on his (catch me if you can) MAC!.  Thanks Norman for a very pleasant days run.  I put 99 miles on the clock.

IMG_2084 copy.jpg

Sunday 12th August 2018

Our monthly meeting at the "Horse and Groom' saw only 7 members with only 3 Velocettes present.  This was probably due to rain showers as I found out on my way there on my trusty Venom.

Sunday 5th August 2018

This event was our Sections display stand at the 'Museum of Power' annual Motorcycle Show, Langford, Essex.  I arrived on my Venom to find John Chisnall and George Coates had already put up our new Gazebo, a grand effort from John and George for all their hard work.  Ian Hayes and Jeff Duffy had already arrived on their Velocettes and after Bill Fagg arrived we still only had 5 machines to display at our stand.  Later Jeff had to leave early leaving us with only four Velocettes.  Still it was a glorious sunny day with loads of motorcycles on show.  Later in the day 2 or 3 members turned up without their bikes, unfortunately our section could have done with more support (perhaps it was the holidays).

Tuesday 15th July 2018

Our monthly run started from Marks Tey Diner with Bill Fagg in charge leading 8 members away (including 4 Velocettes) at 10:00 am.  We all managed to keep together on the busy A120.  It was good to get onto the Essex lanes and 'B' roads heading towards Suffolk.  Eventually, after a good 70 mile run we all arrived at 'The Crown Inn', Hartest, Suffolk for a well needed rest and lunch.  Another days run with sunny weather all the way, plus a leisurely ride back for me to Essex.  Thanks Bill for the run and taking us back to 'The Crown Inn'.  I recorded 116 miles.

Sunday 8th July 2018

I arrived at our meeting at the Horse and Groom on my Venom to find the place packed out with cars!.  Another hot sunny day and enough parking room for 8 members who turned up on a good selection of machinery, one being Ian Hayes on his recently finished immaculate looking shiny Viper.

Tuesday 19 June 2018

George Coates Mystery Run started from the Horse and Groom with 11 of us motoring off at 10 am.  George led us on many Essex roads and lanes , which I must admit some were certainly a mystery to me.  Later we ended up somewhere near Harlow for some well in need of liquid refreshments.  George announced that he was taking us back to his house for a BBQ.  We all arrived after another mystery tour at George's house in Chelmsford.  Pam, his wife, had spent most of her day preparing food for us bikers and what a feast it was.  Thanks George for an interesting run and Pam for feeding all us Velo Fellos!

(The new section-owned Gazebo is seen in the background)

Sunday 10th June 2018

Our monthly meeting at the Horse and groom  brought forth 10 members on various bikes including 4 velocities.  I arrived by car with my wife Anne as we had a dinner date elsewhere.  I have too report that it was another sunny day for a noggin and natter outside.

Sunday 3rd June 2018

7 members (6 on Velos) gathered at the 'Sugar Loaf' pub waiting to be led to the 'Bees in the Wall' pub by Peter Tibbitts to meet Cambridge members for our joint meeting.  With the sun beating down on us about 15 bikes followed Peter and we eventually arrived at the pub (a slight hiccup at a round-a-bout called for a U-turn for several of us along the way).  A very pleasant day run on my old Venom and many thanks to the Cambridge lads for the invitation.

Tuesday 15th May 2018

Johnny Chisnall led his run to John Vines Engineering to view the progress of the Norton 4 cylinder racing engine now fitted in a featherbed frame.  An interesting several hours was spent there with John Vine who explained the work done since our visit last year.  After being treated to tea and biscuits 9 members on various machines motored on to a lunch break.  Another sunny day and a good lunch.  Thanks Johnny for organizing a grand day out.

Sunday 11th May 2018

It was our 26th 'Show off your Velo' event held at the Horse and Groom.  Rob Urand and I arrived a little too late to help John Chisnall and Peter Merrick put up the new Gazebo.  Sunny weather soon saw 10 Velocettes lined up to be judged and after 16 members had voted, Rob and I checked the results.  Anne Morris presented the Winner's Cup to Nick Rowntree for his 1951 ridged MAC,  Dave Iszard with his 1965 Venom Clubman and Peter Gilmore with his 1947 KSS tied for 2nd place.  Hopefully everyone enjoyed the day, unfortunately Paul Weston's Velocette MSS failed to start with slipped timing, so he was given a lift home and return with his trailer.

Sunday 11th April 2018

It was a wet run to the meeting at the 'Horse and Groom', however 10 members turned-up mainly on 4 wheels with only Jeff and myself on our Velocette's.  At least it had stopped raining for the run home.  Unfortunately I have to report some sad news that has just come to my notice.  Mitch Howard passed away last October.  In fact Mitch was due to lead our last run of 2017 that same month, however he did not turn up and we never heard why.  I tried to contact him by e-mail a couple of times but received no reply.  I noted the last two runs Mitch was on were the 'Bees in the Wall' in June and the Kersey run in August.  He was mounted on his Royal Enfield having given up riding his Viper.  Also at that time he was recovering from a bad accident which had occurred in France several months ago.  Mitch was an easy going and generous man and having given up his Viper, he then donated all his Velocette spares to our Centre Section.  I have very little information of him or his family, but my records go back to 2007 when he may have joined the club.  It was thanks to Bernard Stripp who was able to get an e-mail through to his wife Jenny and received this unfortunate news 6 months later.  Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife Jenny and family.

Mitch Howard with his Viper 2012 Pioneer Run.

Wednesday 21st March 2018

The Chelmsford Centre AGM took place at the "Horse and Groom' with 14 members in attendance. Peter Merrick, chairman, took charge of the proceedings and we were able to put all this year's runs, meetings and events together.  Peter then announced he wished to stand down as chairman, however even with 14 members present, no one stepped forward to take over the position.  This is still open to any of our section members.  Peter will continue for now until someone is willing to step in (remember this centre will cease to exist if no-one comes forward).  There was no change with the rest of the posts which stands as before.  Peter sent a full AGM Report to all members on his e-mail list, and he would like to remind any Member who is not on his list, and wishes to be, to get in touch with him.

Sunday 11th March 2018

This meeting, on Mothering Sunday, I was unable to attend.  John Chisnall kindly reported to me that nine members attended but only 3 were on bikes.

Friday 23rd February 2018

We held our Post Christmas Dinner at 'The White Hart', Margaretting Tye.  Many thanks to Peter Merrick (for all the running around) and his wife Jan (for doing the menus) and organizing a great night out for our members.  Also , thank you all for supporting the raffle, sorry you could not all win a prize!  Recently the 'Beast from the East' has stopped all our activity on 2 wheels, (unless you had a sidecar or a Trail bike!  Hopefully things will have improved in time to support the Pioneer Run on Sunday 18th March.  The AGM scheduled for Wednesday 21st March at the H & G could bring some new changes and surprises which will be reported in FT452, till then Safe Riding.

Sunday 11th February 2018

I proceeded to our H & G meeting in my wife Anne's car.  It also happened to be her birthday so it was a flying visit as we were booked for dinner elsewhere.  Peter Merrick and his wife Jan were also in their car, due for a long drive to Newcastle to visit family.  Before the four of us left, there were 10 other members had arrived on 2 or 4 wheels that included 3 Velocettes.  Another good turnout for this time of year.

Friday 2nd February 2018

The VOC Chelmsford Centre section post Christmas dinner is planned for Friday 23rd February 2018 at the White Hart Inn, Margaretting Tye.  Peter has sent out the menu and pricing to the members by e-mail, so he can get a tally of the numbers attending.

Sunday 14th January 2018

My first ride of the year to our meeting at the Horse and Groom.  Ten members turned up in reasonable weather conditions mainly on 4 wheels, plus 4 bikes which included 2 Velocettes.  It was good to get back on the Velo. although I was still feeling the after effects of the 'flu.

Thursday 28th December 2017

The proposed Brass Monkey Run saw Pete Merrick and Bob Urand make it to the car park at the Marks Tey diner.  The decision to go to Pinmill was called off.

I was out of action over the Christmas period with the dreaded Aussie 'Flu virus so no chance of a 2 wheeled run for me!

Sunday 10th December 2017

For our last meeting at the Horse and Groom, the weather unfortunately stopped attendances.  Only John Chisnall made it through the icy conditions.  Pete Merrick got caught out on the A12 covering about 6 miles when 6" of snow brought everything to a halt, so he returned home.  I also was not chancing a run on 2 wheels in those conditions, so the Venom was wheeled back into the garage.

Wednesday 15th November 2017

Our Centre held a Committee meeting at the Horse and Groom at 8:00 pm.  I have to report that 11 members attended, mainly on 4 wheels.  Chairman Peter Merrick went through the agenda in great detail and e-mailed a full report to every member on his list.  Although nobody volunteered to arrange our post Christmas Dinner, Peter may have news in the near future.  Our Centre VOC AGM is planned for Wednesday 21st March 2018 at 20:00 hours, at the Horse and Groom, please try and attend.  Safe riding for 2018.

Sunday 12th November 2017

The meeting at the Horse and Groom saw a packed house of bicyclists.  With our 12 members trying to sit around a reserved table for 8, it was a bit of a squeeze, although we managed to pack in a few more.  Other members were scattered around the packed bar area, so made for a lively and noisy time.  I am guessing our December meeting may be just as busy.

Tuesday 17th October 2017

For our last run on the calendar for this year, we met at Marks Tey Diner for a 10:30 am start.   The weather looked good as Rob Urand and I thumped our way over to the meeting point.  While we were both tanking-up for petroleum, I discovered a large pool of oil (larger than usual) under the Venom.  So I returned home smartly threw a very old leg over the Bonneville.  On returning to the meeting point I found that John Allen was now leading the run as Mitch Howard had not appeared!  (Mitch originally took over this run from Peter Merrick.)  However, John did a splendid tour of traffic free roads and lanes to arrive eventually at Walton-on-the-Naze for lunch.  We had 7 Velocettes on this run, plus 3 modern machines.  After a decent lunch we followed John again to a friends house to admire his collection of NSU's.  Not all of us stayed for tea and it was now Robert's turn to discover oil pumping out the middle of his pushrod tube.  Thanks John for leading us on a good days run on your 'catch me if you can' MAC.

Sunday 11th October 2017

Our monthly meeting brought forth 15 members plus 6 Velocettes.  Good to see George Coates back from the States and on his Venom Clubman with a reconditioned magneto.  Also Rod Ebdon on his newly acquires 54' MAC who made it after his second attempt, now seeming to be running OK.  A good turnout plus good weather.

Tuesday 19th September 2017

Norman's run started at 10am from 'The Ship' with 11 members raring to go.  This was, as far as I can recall, the largest number of members on a Chelmsford Centre run so far.  Once again we enjoyed good weather as Norman led us through many pleasant Essex lanes to Cornish Hall End.  We arrived at 'The Horse and Groom' (not to be confused with our Galleywood H&G) in time for a decent well organized lunch.  I noted many makes of machines on his run and only Jeff had a slight hiccup with his BSA 650 twin.  Many thanks to Norman for a great day's run.

Sunday 10th September 2017

Another good turn-out, I counted 5 velocettes amongst various other machines with 13 members, once again basking in the sunshine.  This is our fifth meeting at our new venue and the weather has been perfect every time.  It's got to rain sometime!

Tuesday 15th August 2017

I stepped in at the last minute to lead George Coates' day run as unfortunately he was away in the US.  Peter Merrick sent an urgent e-mail to let members know about the changes to the event.  I left Marks Tey Diner at 10:30am with John C, Mitch H, Ian H, Rob U and Jeff D.  Thanks for all your support.  With good weather I led a familiar run through Suffolk arriving at 'The Bell' Kersey for a decent lunch.  After lunch we rode off to visit my brother Paul at Edwardstone who kindly supplied us all with a cuppa as we relaxed in his garden before riding off back to Essex.

Sunday 13th August 2017

Once again our monthly meeting at the 'Horse and Groom' enjoyed good sunny weather.  Another good turnout with 10 members arriving on various machines.  However, only 5 were Velocettes and you could hear the familiar sound long before they arrived.

Saturday 5th August 2017

Norman Archard arranged a Free Breakfast Run starting from 'The Ship' at 9:00am.  Six Velocettes and one Aprilia lined-up but unfortunately Rob Urand's kickstart spring broke.  After sorting out his problem and a bump start we sent Rob off home to catch us up later on his BMW.  Norman's route took us through Essex into Suffolk mainly through the lanes and less busy B roads.  Navigating through Haverhill was the only heavy traffic we encountered, by then I was ready for my free breakfast.  A further 6 miles on the A143 we all pulled into a proper biker's cafe where 7 hungry guys were also ready for their breakfast (including Rob who caught us up on his unmentionable BMW).  Thanks Norman for a good days ride in fair weather once again.

Tuesday 19th July 2017

Our monthly run was organized by Rob Urand starting from the Diner at Marks Tey.  Rob led 8 machines away including 4 Velocities at 10:00 am.  Our destination was the village of Butley, near Woodbridge in Suffolk where lunch was arranged at the "Oyster Inn".  Once again it was good sunny weather.  Thanks Rob for putting a good days run together.

Sunday 9th July 2017

I was back on the Venom to the "Horse and Groom" for our monthly meeting.  12 members attended on various machines, but I counted only 5 Velocettes.  Another sunny day to be able to sit outside for a noggin and natter.

Tuesday 20th June 2017

Bill Fagg's run started from J & S Motorcycles, Braintree  with 3 Velocettes and 7 various other machines.  Bill led us away at 10:00 am onto a busy  A131.  Unfortunately someone stalled his engine which caused a party of 3 to go one way and the rest to go another way.   I had stopped on the side of the road, however nobody noticed me!  I eventually caught up with  Bill and Jeff 2 miles down the road.  After much confusion Billl set off across country (at a smart pace) to join the rest of the group.  Meanwhile, Norman Archard led the rest of the other confused group to the "Crown Inn" in Hartest for our arranged lunch.  Dave Iszard joined us later after changing his MSS for a BMW.  He should have stayed on his Velocette as he had a slow puncture on the way home.   Thanks Bill for an interesting day's run, all's well that ends well.

Sunday 11th June 2017

Rob Urand and I thumped off to 'The Horse and Groom' to prepare for the 25th Show Off Your Velocette event.  We arrived to find John Chisnall busily putting up a small marque which turned out to be very useful during the show.  Eventually we had 11 Velocities lined-up in the sunshine for members to vote on.  17 voting forms were collected and counted by Rob and myself.  The results as stated, 1st Tony Seber KSS Mk II 29 points, 2nd Nick Roundtree MAC 18 points, 3rd Bill Fagg Venom Clubman 15 points.  Many thanks to all those helpers and voters who made my last SOYV event a pleasant day out, hopefully for all.

Sunday 4th June 2017

This was our joint meeting with the Cambridge VOC.  Ten of us met at the Sugar Loafs at 11 am on various machinery.  I counted 5 velocettes until Peter Tibbets arrived on a Thruxton and led the way to 'The Bees in the Wall' PH.  Another glorious sunny day to be out riding our machines and to have the company of the Cambridge Centre members.  I made the round trip of 124 miles on the Venom.

Tuesday 16 May 2017

Jonny Chisnall's run set off from 'The Ship' at 10 am to visit John Vines engineering.  This was our annual visit to see the progress of his (replica) 1952 dohc 4-cylinder racing Norton.  Although not up and running yet it was certainly well advanced from last year.  After a couple of interesting hours we set off for Wallasea Island and lunch.  Unfortunately we got split up in a traffic jam, however we all arrived safely at the Yacht Club for a good lunch.  Thank you John for an interesting day out.

Sunday 14th May 2017

Our second meeting at 'The Horse and Groom' brought forth many members with a good selection of machinery, ranging from a new Indian Twin to a very unorthodox MOV.  It was another sunny day in pleasant surroundings for socializing.  We seem to be encouraging more members and hopefully this will continue even on wet and windy days.

Sunday 9th April 2017

Our first meeting at the new venue 'The Horse and Groom' could not have gone better.  It must have been the hottest day of the year, which brought out a good attendance.  I counted 15 members on bikes, most of which were Velocettes.  The weather being so brilliant we were all able to congregate outside in the sun, checking each other's machinery.  It was the first time I had seen Ian Hayes on a bike as he has just purchased a T100 (I believe he is still waiting to fit a set of mudgaurds to his Velo).  Sorry to hear that Richard Barlow's Vemon broke down on the A12 on his way home - Carol N. came to his rescue!  I last heard that Richard was trying to find the fault.  A welcome back to the Club to Dave Izzard and Rod Ebdon.  Rod, who I was riding with in the 60's, and Dave, who was an active club racer on his Venom in the 70/80s.  This involved many rides up to Cadwell Park to watch Dave in action.

Just a reminder that on Sunday 11th June it is the annual 'Show Off Your Velo' meeting at 'The Horse and Groom'.

Lastly, an amendment that Mitch Howard is still a member of the Chelmsford Centre.

Wednesday 15th March 2017

Our AGM was held at 'The Ship' with proceedings starting at 8:00pm by our chairman Peter Merrick.  A good turnout of 12 members attending, although I must say that it was still the same members that stepped forward to do all the club runs!  Finally after 20 years of meeting at 'The Ship' we are leaving it in favour of a new venue.  A full report has been sent to all our members who are on Peter's e-mail list.  Please note that from the beginning of April our new venue for meeting will be the Horse and Groom, The Common, Galleywood, Chelmsford CM2 8JP, until further notice.

Sunday 12th March 2017

This meeting was a chance to exercise my Venom with a run down to 'The Ship'.  Another good turn out with 13 members arriving on various modes of transport, amongst which I counted 7 Velocettes.  Hopefully we will have this kind of turnout for the rest of the year.

Friday 3rd March 2017

Members, wifes and friends gathered in the evening for our Annual Dinner.   We were slightly down on numbers from previous years, however 21 of us enjoyed ourselves at 'The Blue Anchor' at Feering.  I never heard any complaints so I gather it was a great success.  Our thanks go to Rob Urand for his work in organising this event and to Peter Merrick for doing the raffle.

Sunday 12th February 2017

My first meeting at the 'Ship' this year and on 4 wheels.  I have to say I was not alone, Dave F., John C., Ian H., Bernard S., George C., Norman A., and John T. also arrived on 4 wheels.  So roll on Spring when hopefully most of us will be on 2 wheels

Sunday 5th February 2017

A visit to the 'Horse and Groom' was arranged by Peter Merrick and John Chisnall with the idea to see if this PH would suit our needs better than the 'Ship'.  Those who attended were John C. (Lomax), Bernard S. (Venom), Rod H. (BMW), Colin M. (car), Pete M. (car), Jeff D. and his wife (car), Graham O. (car) and myself (Venom).  The jury is still out on this one but I enjoyed going to a new venue though maybe it could be worth trying-out a few more.

Sunday 8th January 2017

The first meeting of the year and I was unable to go, so left the Venom sulking in the garage.  After phoning around several members I was informed that only 5 attended, John Chisnall, Dave Farrow, George Coates, John Tanner and a new member on a Velocette.  Unfortunately no one knew his name, anyhow, welcome to our Centre and we hope to see you again at the next meeting.  Our Annual Dinner is on Friday 3rd March, still a few seats available.  The AGM is scheduled for Wednesday 15th March at 7:30pm at the 'Ship'.

Keep fettling those Velo's for the years events.

Safe Riding.

1st January 2017

Our planned Xmas Run for 29th Dec 2016 failed to materialize mainly due to icy conditions and various members having colds.   Pete was unable to do the run and passed the baton to Rob Urand.  Rob arrived at my abode on his BMW as I was spreading salt on the icy driveway.  Although I and the Venom were ready, me in my thermals, common sense prevailed.  Rob proceeded to the Diner just in case other brave souls were prepared to go on the Run.  Only Pete and family came in the car.  Many thanks to Rob for being there in icy conditions.

Sunday 11th December 2016

I proceeded on the Venom to the “Ship” for our last meeting of the year. Although the sun was out the roads were wet & slippery from the latest salting, just a warning for the conditions we will be riding in for the next 3months. Those present were: Bernard S. Venom, Rod H. Viper, Jeff D. Venomised Viper, Bill F. BMW. Followed by Norman A. John C. Pete M. Ian H. John T. all on 4 wheels. Man of the moment was Jeff having changed his Viper into a Venom in an amazing short time, found it difficult to start!

A Happy New Year to one and all.

Wednesday 16th November 2016

Our Committee Meeting was arranged at the “Ship”.  Unfortunately booking the big round table was a problem.  We had to settled down in the new games room.  Apart from getting a snooker cue up one's nose or an eye poked out we were able to proceed with the meeting. Pete our Chairman noted that those in attendance were as follows: John C. Bill F. Rob U. Nick R. Alan M. Dave F. Graham O. and Dave I.

The AGENDA was as follows:

1sst the planned December Run on Thurs. 29th from “The Diner” Marks Tey. 10-00a.m. (coffee break) leaving 10-45a.m. (weather permitting)

2nd  was the post Christmas Dinner which Rob & Alan suggested “The Blue Anchor” at Feering on Fri. 3rd Mar. 2017, plus Pete offered to be our raffle master.

3rd was our planned AGM for Wed. 15th Mar. 2017 the “Ship”8-00p.m.  Our Chairman Pete suggested the “Ship” was no longer convenient for our attendance. So could any of our Members recommend a more suitable Venue in the Chelmsford area. (I will no doubt personally miss the “Ship, there have been some good times over last 20yrs, however with latest new management it maybe time to move on ?)

4th was the monies raised from the generous offer from Mitch Howard who donated all his Velo spares to our centre. (Mitch is no longer a member) With the proceeds we hope to do a coach trip to the National Motor Museum sometime in the New year, Pete is looking into the coach hire. We managed to close the meeting before the loud music blasted us out of the Pub, which for future reference is they play every 3rd Wed. of the month.

Tuesday 25th October 2016

I thought I would have a go at doing the last run of the year.  Start time: 10-00a.m. from Marks Tey Diner. Those joining me were: Jeff D. (Suzuki ), Norman A. ( Honda), Graham O (Yam), Bill F (BMW), George C. (Venom C.) Roy N. (Guzzi) and Pete M. (Yam) who caught up with us at the lunch break.  Our destination was to visit 2 Italian M/C Emporium's in the Stowmarket area.  The autumn weather could not have been better or more colourful as we travel through the Suffolk countryside.  We arrived at our 1st stop at “Mototechniks” around noon.  After a good look around at some new tasty Italian machinery we motored off to Needham Market for our lunch break at 'The Lion' PH.  Pete M. had caught up with us and was inside finishing off his lunch (a curry no doubt?).  After lunch, 2 of our members Jeff & George made their way homewards, so only 6 of us rode off to pay a visit to “Made in Italy Motorcycles Ltd”.  The selection of machines were more varied here.  Classic Italian an even some Brit Classic's including a Vincent priced at £40,000,  and not a Velo to be seen anywhere.  So it was now home before dark.  I hope everyone enjoyed the The Italian Job Run and a thank you to Roy who navigated us around the Stowmarket area.  I made it a round trip of 105 miles.

Sunday 11th October 2016

Our Sunday Meeting at the 'Ship' brought forth around 15 members.  Six Velo's and various other means of transport were scattered around the CP.  Once again sunny weather prevailed for us.  Dennis Bardwell put in an appearance, glad to see you well and riding again.  I would like mention that Pete Gilmore arrived on his Venom with new wheels re-built by himself, (well done).  It's good to see so many members turning up for our monthly meetings, hopefully it will continue.

Tuesday 20th September 2016

The next event on the calendar was  Rob Urand's day run to Anglesey Abbey. on Tues.  My Venom had a rear brake problem so I returned home.  Rob (BMW) led the group away from Marks Tey Diner around 10a.m.  Those following were Norman A. (Venom), John C. (MSS), John A. (MAC), Graham O. (Yam ) and Bill F. (VFR ).  According to reports they had a good run to the Abbey in fine weather.  After lunch Norman had to return home early leaving the other 5 to continue the afternoon run.  Just outside Saffron Walden disaster struck when John Chisnall's MSS got a rear puncture.  Apparently it was quite spectacular to watch as he managed not to fall off.  With no tools or spare tube amongst them plan 'B' was put into operation.  While Graham & Bill stayed with the MSS, John Allen led Rob & John C. on the BMW to the M/C Restoration, Company in Saffron Walden.  They kindly took out a van and brought back the MSS  and put in a new tube.  (John wishes to thank the manager Chris Daniels for all his help.)  Probably enough excitement for one day.  Many thanks Rob for doing the Run.

Sunday 11th September 2016

The monthly meeting at the 'Ship' produced another good turn out with 15 members arriving on various means of transport.  Most of our regulars were there, plus some new faces as follows: Cliff Wilson (Indian), Paul Weston (MSS), Rod Hill (Viper) and Ian Hayes (Car).  I noted 7 Velo's amongst the array of bikes and John Chisnall's Lomax 3 wheeler, plus it was another sunny day.

Tuesday 16th August 2016

Unfortunately we failed to get any member to volunteer to have a go at leading a run.  Our apologies to Rodger Franklin who was hoping to visit us on this run.

Sunday 12th August 2016

Our meeting at 'The Ship' was the biggest gathering so far this year with 12 members.  I guess it was the good weather that brought them out, too many names and machines to mention.  Hopefully this will continue to build.

Saturday 6th August 2016

Bill Fagg's run started from the old Hein Gericke place at Braintree.  Bill (Venom) led us away just after 10am followed by myself (Venom), John C. (MSS), George C. (Venom C), Graham O. (Yam), Nick U. (MAC) and Norman A. (Honda).  The weather was fine and sunny, unlike Bill's last club run where it was chucking it down all day.  Bill kept up a good pace through Essex and into Suffolk mostly on traffic free roads.  Eventually arriving at the village of Hawkeden where at 'The Queens Head' PH they were holding a meeting of vintage and classic cars.  There was a good selection of cars to peruse over, however most  people were looking at our Velo's parked nearby.  We all tucked in to a good lunch before mounting our machinery and thumping back to Essex.  A pleasant run on a sunny day - Thanks Bill.

Saturday 23rd July 2016

Norman Archard's Breakfast Run started from 'The Ship' at 8:00am.  Those who manage to get up maybe a little earlier than usual were: Graham O. (Yam), Bill F. (Venom), Nick U. (MAC), Jeff D. (Viper), Pete M. (Viper) and George C (Venom C). Norman Honda mounted led the group through Essex and into Suffolk near Bury St. Edmunds, it was now time to serve up our centre's Free Breakfast. (If this doesn't get members out on their Velo's - nothing will.)  So after a good run of over 60 miles a free breakfast was devoured by 7 hungry bikers.  The run continued back to Essex making a round trip of over 130 miles for most. (Sorry I was unable to make it as I was involved in a charity do for the Essex Air Ambulance)

Tuesday 19th July 2016

George Coates' day run started from the “Ship” at 10-00a.m.  It was an all Velo affair with George leading on his Venom Clubman followed by John C. (MSS) myself (Venom) with Jeff D. (Viper) at the rear.  It was a scorcher of a day and sticky with all gear on.  George led us down a good variety of different types of roads & surfaces!  Eventually we stopped for a cuppa near Harlow, nice to get the gear off for a while. George then announced that his wife Pam was preparing a BBQ for us back at his home.  Soon we were motoring back towards Chelmsford, but was delayed by a large accident near High Roding.  After a few diversions we arrived at George's house were we found Norman Archard supping a nice cool drink.  (Norman was unable to get to run on time).  Soon we were all tucking into a splendid assortment of food & drink.  A special thank you to George & Pam for serving up such a great meal for all us Velo lads.  I made it a round trip of 100mls.

Sunday 12th June 2016

Our meeting at the “Ship” was a damp one.  Those attending were George C. (Venom C.), Nick R. (MAC), Pete M. (Yamaha), John C. (Honda), Dave F. (Car) myself (Venom) and a member Ian who we had not seen before.  We also had a visitor from the V.V.M.C on a smart looking Vincent Comet.  I enjoyed the damp ride home as in these conditions the Venom always runs so well.

Pete Merrick's day run started from the Bungalow Cafe Marks Tey at around 10-00 am.  Pete led us away on his Yam Divi followed by Jeff Duffy Viper, John Allen MAC, George Coates Venom C., myself Venom and Robert Urand BMW.  Once we had all negotiated through Colchester it was a good ride along mainly traffic free country roads.  (Plus Pete had arranged another sunny day).  Our destination was Old Felixstow with pleasant surroundings along the waterfront with plenty of boat activity.  After a decent lunch and a stroll we motored off to check out some smart but expensive British retro-machinery for sale at Washbrook  M/C  Emporium at Copdock. Homeward bound with a promise of a cuppa from John Allen if I can keep up with him!  Unfortunately on the busy A12 John was motoring along smartly and I followed the wrong Velo, never mind a good days run, thanks Pete.  Our Sunday meet on 10th at the “Ship” brought forth Nick U. and Ken M. on their MAC's, John C. MSS, Jeff D. 1400 Suzuki, Bernard S. and John T. arrived by car.  My wife also dropped me off by car having been partying into the early hours --- enough said.

Sun. 5th June 2016

Nine of us met up at the “Sugar Loaves” Sible Hedingham to join the Cambridge Centre at the “Bee's-in-the-Wall at Whittlesford.  Pete Merrick led a variety of different machinery from Velo's, Inter-Norton, Royal Enfield and a 100cc Suzuki (moped?) up to the meeting.  Welcome back Mitch who had been absent for some time.  (Long story, but he is now on an Enfield.)  This was a straight forward run in glorious  sunny weather.  The CP was full of bikes and members and we all had a chance to have a good natter and a good look at each other machines.  Thanks to the Cambridge Centre for the invite, a great day out in perfect motorcycling weather.  Finally John Chisnall led us safely back home to Essex via the M11.  I made it a round trip of 166mls.

Tues. 17th May 2016
John Chisnall's day run started at 10-00p.m. from the “Ship”.  Those supporting John were: Norman Archard, Bill Fagg, Pete Merrick, Graham O'Connor, George Coates, and Jeff Duffy.  Destination was John Vines Engineering Works to catch up with the advance work on the 1952 DOHC Norton 4 cylinder special.  (This was our 3rd visit to the works.)  Hopefully the project will be finished next year with a chance of hearing it running.  The run continued to a Yacht Club for lunch near Wallasea Island.  According to John it was a low mileage run, as I was unable to participate on this run I'm sure everyone had a good day out, thanks John.

Sun. 8th May 2016. 'Show off your Velo' Day

With glorious sunny weather we soon had a line up of 11 Velocettes.  Some of our regular members were absent, so many thanks to those who were able to support this annual event.  A special 'thank you' to Bob Nicholls who rode up all the way from Chipping Camden, also Geoff Harris who arrived from the London Centre.  Our old friend, Brian Cant, made the effort to join us from Buckingham on his Honda. Commiserations to Nick Roundtree last years winner who's main shaft pulley nut came off on his way to the event.  Once all the voting forms were collected Bernard Stripp and I checked over all the results.  1st place was Bob Nicholls Venom Special 34pts,  2nd place Ken Morris MAC 16pts,  3rd place, Jeff Duffy Viper 11pts.  My wife Anne presented Ken with the Chelmsford George Topley Challenge Cup for his early ridged MAC.  (Sorry Bob you should have won our visitor's Cup for your Venom---but we don't have one !)  Thanks to all those displaying their Velo's without you we would not have a show.

Sun. 20th Mar. 2016

Unfortunately I missed out on the Pioneer Run on.  However members that supported it were Norman Archard, Pete Merrick, Bill Fagg, Graham O'Connell and Jeff Duffy.

Sun. 13th Mar. 2016

I thumped over to the “Ship” on the Venom for our monthly meet.  The weather was reasonable so a selection of various machinery was present in the car park.  We welcomed new member Ron on his early MAC.  (Sorry I don't have your surname)  Those also in attendance were John C. Dave F. George C. Pete M. and Bernard S.

Wednesday 9th Mar. 2016

Our yearly AGM was held at ‘The Ship’.  Twelve members squeezed around the big round table.  Proceedings started with the election for this year’s committee (no change from last year)-

Chairman -      Pete Merrick,

Social Sec. -    Alan Morris,

Treasurer -       Norman Archard,

Web Master-   George Coates

It was decided to include Oct. in our 3rd Tues. of the week runs, however Aug. & Oct. are still vacant (any volunteers?)  Many other events were discussed, including how to encourage new members.  Pete Merrick e-mailed a full AGM report to Chelmsford members.  Any Member not on Pete's list should contact him if they wish to get the latest centre news.

Friday 19th Feb. 2016

We again returned to “The Green Dragon” for our Annual Dinner.  Member’s wife’s and friends gathered together for a good nosh up.  Down on numbers this year, however everyone (as far as I know) had an enjoyable evening.  Many thanks to Norman Archard for arranging the booking, plus a thank you to Pete & Jan Merrick, our raffle masters, for arranging the fun and games!

Sun. 1st May 2016

The next event on our calender was to meet up with the Woburn Centre on Sun. May 1st.  Unfortunately only 4 of us met up at 11-00a.m. at Buntingford petrol station.  I was last to arrive, Venom mounted, to see John Chisnall checking out his electrics on his MSS, turned out to be a blown fuse. Pete Merrick and Jeff Duffy were on their Viper's.  Chairman Pete led us the way onto the infamous A507, eventually turning off hopefully towards the Cranfield area.  However we ended up at the “Rose & Crown” Ridgmont”!  Never mind, the sun was still shining and after a couple of 'U' turns we found a sign for Cranfield (not an easy place to locate).  We arrived at the “Cross Keys” a little late to see a large group of Woburn members with a splendid array of good looking Velo's.  Good to meet up with Ray Thurston and Jim Macintosh - long time no see.  Thanks for the drinks Pete, and Jeff for the sandwiches.  Time to motor back home with Pete's Viper buzzing away in front which was an easier route than coming!  Eventually stopping at Buntingford for those who needed petrol, except Jeff who continued on.  Pete left us near Stanford Airport, and John followed me to Leading Roding where we parted.  Approaching Chelmsford my Venom wasn't handling like a Velo, and at the next round-a-bout I realised I had a rear puncture.  Fortunately friend Graham and his wife Anne were less than a mile away, so I tank slapped along at 10mph holding up some very frustrated car drivers behind me.  Fortunately Graham and Anne were at home and after a cuppa we set about removing the rear wheel.  A steel spinter was removed from the tyre and a new tube (which I was carrying) was fitted.  It took only 35mins with Graham's help, many thanks mate.  So I was home before dark where my worried wife was waiting with a hot bath and a roast dinner (don't read to much into that).  Much too much excitement for one day!

Sun. 10th Apr. 2016

Another sunny day for our noon meeting at the “Ship”. A selection of various machinery was scattered around the carpark.  Apart from some familiar Velo's there were 2 Triumphs, 1 Honda, 1 Harley and a new guy on an Indian.  Mike Drew from Kent put in an appearance (long time since last visit).  David Bardwell first time for him to visit our centre, a good turn out of 11 members in all.
